Understand optional Sync

Decide when to connect your local library to other devices.

Accounts are optional for local writing

Ligature Sync is an optional paid service. You can keep editing a local library without signing in. An account and an active Sync plan are required to use the service.

Connect your current library

  1. Open the local library you want to sync.
  2. Open Settings from the library switcher, then choose Sync.
  3. Choose Sign in if you are not signed in. Sync requires an active subscription.
  4. Under Create new synced library, turn on Sync this open library.
  5. Complete the Passphrase prompt and choose Sync now. Check the status before opening the library on another device.

Keep your passphrase

Each synced library uses a passphrase to decrypt its contents on a device. Keep the passphrase somewhere you can retrieve it when adding another device. The app’s passphrase prompt states that Ligature does not save it.

Choose the right library

Creating a new synced library publishes the library currently open on your device. On another device, add that library from your account instead of creating a second library with the same name.

Check the library’s location

Keep Ligature Sync off for a library already managed by another folder sync provider, including iCloud Drive.
