Understand library files

Know where your writing lives and what to back up.

Your library folder is your work

Ligature stores your library in a .ligature folder on your device. On Mac it may appear as a single package in Finder. Keep the entire library together when backing it up. The local search index is a rebuildable cache of those files.

  1. Open Settings → Library & Recovery.
  2. Find Location under Portable library.
  3. Choose Reveal to show the active library in Finder or File Explorer.

Write locally

Core editing does not require an account, an internet connection, or a hosted service. Your local files remain available when you are offline.

Choose one sync method

A library can live in a folder managed by a third-party sync provider. Do not also enable Ligature Sync for that same library: the two providers can make competing changes.
